Lime reduces the acidity of soil. 99% of Turf diseases are favored by high acids. Acidic soil kills microorganisms which are essential to the decomposition of grass clippings, which provides nitrogen for the grass. Proper soil acidity of a ph reading of 7.0 is ideal and makes a big difference in allowing the grass to take up nutrients from the soil. Lime takes months to penetrate into the soil. Applying on top of the grass limits the single application amount. We can’t do as a farmer and plow a sufficient amount of lime in to the soil once a year. Therefore we recommend two applications per season.
